Term 4, Week 3 - 20th October, 2022
From the Principal
Dear families,
2022 NAPLAN Results
In the past couple of weeks, whole school NAPLAN data has been released to schools and parents and it is incredibly pleasing to see how our students performed in their cohorts.
The data collected from NAPLAN 2022 provides leadership and teaching staff at St Maria Goretti important baseline information to better understand the strengths and opportunities for growth of our students and to evaluate school programs to ensure they are best meeting our students’ needs.
As a school:
- In Writing & Numeracy, 100% of our Year 3 students are at or above the national minimum standard.
- In Reading, Grammar & Punctuation, & Numeracy, 100% of our Year 5 students are at or above the national minimum standard.
How to read the results?
In Year 3:
In Year 3 the minimum standard is a band 2, therefore if students are working in bands 3 or above, they are above the minimum standard. They do not report above a band 6 in Year 3.
In Year 5:
In Year 5 the minimum standard is a band 4, therefore students working in bands 5 and above are working above the national minimum standard. They only report up to a band 8 in Year 5.
Please see graph below.
When interpreting your child’s results, please keep in mind that children change and develop rapidly, and a single test cannot possibly assess all their abilities. A variety of factors can affect how well your child does on any test, including their motivation, attention, mood, physical wellbeing, and opportunities for learning.
The consistency of a whole-school implementation of the Reading Improvement Strategy (RIS) and the INSPIRE Maths strategy has supported our positive results in Reading and Numeracy this year. Congratulations to our Year 3 and Year 5 students.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to speak to your child’s teacher.
Safe Work Month 2022
During the third week of Safe Work Month 2022, we are focussing on Occupational Violence and Aggression (OVA). This occurs when staff members are abused, threatened, or assaulted at the workplace, or while they are working. This can result in physical and psychological harm, and our school and wider system is committed to taking steps to prevent OVA, responding to incidents appropriately and supporting staff members who are impacted.
MacKillop Way Term 4 Focus
“Forgiveness is love” Mary MacKillop 1871 | Forgiving others is a very hard thing to do because of the harm that has been done to us. Apologising and accepting an apology is the first big step. | · Being conscious of how our words and actions can hurt others · Taking the time to think about others first · Thinking before we speak and act · Asking ourselves “Is what I am going to say or do going to cause pain, sadness, anger or hurt in another person?" · Apologising · Forgiving others |
World Teachers' Day!
On the 28th of October, we celebrate World Teachers' Day. At St Maria Goretti, we are so lucky to have a team of dedicated, energetic and highly skilled teachers who truly love what they do!
Please join me in saying thank you to our teachers for ‘teaching through every moment’.
Mrs Robinson... our P-2 HaSS and Science teacher, and whole school P.E. & Drama teacher, who never loses touch with the classroom and brings so much energy & expertise to every learning experience.
Mr Zahner... our P-2 classroom teacher, who makes learning so FUN and engaging in the lower years. Mr Zahner is an expert at building relationships with his students and bringing 'magic' into the classroom.
Miss Key... our 3-6 classroom teacher, who constantly strives to be the best educator she can be and encourages students to be the best they can be, too. Miss Key fosters curiosity, deep thinking, and reflection in the middle and upper primary years.
Mrs Anderson... our wonderful, dedicated teacher librarian, who instills a love of reading in every child and always goes the extra mile in her role.
Mrs Twidale... our amazing learning support teacher, who ensures each individual student at our school reaches their full potential through her kind and diligent approach and years of experience.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Yours in education,
Casey Robinson

Library Borrowing
Thank you for supporting weekly borrowing to date this term. Please follow up by sharing the book choices made by your students at home over the week. The last week for borrowing will be Week 6, with loans due in Week 7. This is necessary for us to complete our end of year tasks. Returning students in Prep to Year 5, who wish to borrow for the holidays and have no overdue books, may select books on Monday 28th in Week 9.
Library Learning
- Our P-2 students are testing their knowledge of Fiction and Non-Fiction texts by completing a sorting exercise and giving reasons for their choices.
- Year 3-6 students will begin their book sharing interviews next week and will also be gathering information for their specific inquiry question about Antarctica.
Happy Reading Everyone!
